Commonest cause of treatable blindness.

A cataract is a clouding of the normal clear lens of the eye. Cataracts are not a growth or a film and do not have to be ripe to be removed.

Cataracts are commonly seen in diabetics and patients on long term steroids.

TREATMENT:

The only treatment available is surgery.
New advances and techniques have made cataract surgery one of the most successful and life-improving surgical procedures. There is no proven medical treatment available to prevent the formation or progression of cataracts. And there are no medications, eye drops, exercises or glasses that will make a cataract disappear.

WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME FOR SURGERY?

When the decreased vision caused by cataracts begins to interfere with daily activities, such as reading, driving and watching television, cataract surgery should be considered.

The most common type of cataract surgery performed is phacoemulsification, usually done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
In phacoemulsification, the nucleus is fragmented by an ultrasonic oscillating probe. The nuclear fragments are simultaneously suctioned from the eye
thereby removing the cloudy natural lens and replace it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL) implant.

The size of the incision could be (1.8 to 2.8mm) only.

ADVANTAGES:

Faster wound healing and patient rehabilitation.
Less astigmatism.
Near normal size of the image post surgery.

VISION CHOICES TO MATCH YOUR LIFESTYLE:

TYPES OF IOL:

MONOFOCAL LENSES: (Aspheric IOLs): To correct distant vision.
MULTIFOCAL LENSES: To correct presbyopia and distant vision

SPECIAL TYPE OF LENSES:

TORIC LENSES: To correct astigmatism
ACCOMMODATING IOLS: To correct presbyopia.

AFTER SURGERY:

1. Day care surgery
2. Early rehabilitation to normal activities within 2 to 3 days.
3. Sunglasses to be worn for photosensitivity.
4. Corrective glasses to be worn accordingly after a month.
Cataract surgery isn’t just the end of clouded vision: it’s the beginning of a bright new look.
